Exploring the heart of Kuala Lumpur -Petaling Street

Enter under the welcoming red and green Chinese sign, covered in red Chinese lanterns, into the realm of JalanPetaling (Jalan meaning street) in Chinatown. Here you’ll find bustling street market stalls selling everything from food to budget handicrafts and souvenirs all undercover from the heat and rain. Chinese lanterns and Malaysian flags are strung above your head, just in case you forget where you are. Come night time and the market is transformed into an even busier night market. Sightseeing near Petaling Street

Central Market

Central Market has been running since 1888 and is part of the cities heritage and culture and is literally adorned in the Malaysian flag. The iconic blue facade building has served as a prominent landmark in colonial and modern day Kuala Lumpur. Over two floors, the market offers handicrafts, locally made clothing, batiks, woodwork, jade and antiques. During the weekends, there are also performances of theatre and dance held here. It is also very near to KL Sentral station.

Jamek Mosque

Visit the Masjid Jamek mosque in KL, conveniently right next to Masjid Jamek LRT station on the Gombak River. As one of the oldest mosques in KL it was designed by British Arthur Benison Hubback and opened in 1909. Women, take a sarong or large scarf to cover your head, but there are robes to hire. Men come here to pray and relax as they sit on the floors of this male only mosque which gets very busy on a Friday afternoon. The white domes and red stone intricate archways and minarets give it a real Moorish style.

Transportation near Petaling Street

Kuala Lumpur has a comprehensive public transport system. Those staying in either the old and new city centres are fairly covered by the various train lines running here. There are three LRT lines as well as a monorail serving many stops throughout this commercial district. To get to the Petronas Towers, simply hop on the LRT Kelana Jaya line and get off at KLCC. The station is located below Suria KLCC, the shopping mall at the base of the towers.
